This week I arranged my little plants and added a few more that I can tend till we make a garden plan for next season. We have a few xeriscaping friends who are giving us the runners and babies from their own plants to help start us out. So far we are adding only a little bit at a time- a few 'hen and chicks', some iris (about 30 colors!) and my potted herb garden. Now the weeding that needs to be done in our jungle of a backyard...umm...that is another story...maybe in September??? Cross your fingers the city doesn't fine us for 'noxious weed lawn abuse' before we can clean it up! The up side is that we are unintentionally creating a nice bird, toad and grasshopper habitat.

Helping our House Become a Home
We are starting to nest in our new place. Fresh veggies & flowers from farmer Claire are such a delight. I am throughouly enjoying them and I am a bit envious of Claire's farmgirl life. But when I read and hear about her farm travails I am not so envious. You have to have a special calling to be a good for the earth, good for the animals and good for the belly farmer these days. She works so hard and is a wife and mama of two growing kids! I don't have serious farmer leanings, just great appreciation for the art of it and respect for those who bring wholesome food and beauty to my table. Grilled sunburst & pattypan squash and Colorado trout a'la Nate with fresh dill butter made for a tasty supper and one of our first sit down meals. I have already made one batch of kale walnut pesto this week and need to make a basil batch in a hurry.
